The APEC-IBIZ is a competency-based program. As much as possible it is a self-directed program with recognition of prior learning and/or existing qualifications. Learners will be required to complete an individual learning plan, which is based on the differential between the required knowledge and skill sets and those present at the time of application and admission into the program.
In order to assist in the design of this learning plan, candidates are required to review the 104 areas of knowledge and skill sets which are segmented into Seven (7) General Areas of Competence or GACs, and self assess their existing level of knowledge and ability in each of the areas of competency and submit it along with other components of the application package.
Certified counsellors will have demonstrated their knowledge and ability is each of these Areas of Competence.
The following chart indicates the criteria to be used for self-evaluation and for evaluation of the required competencies for certification. These levels recognize the importance of knowledge (theory) and ability (application) of skills by the competent counsellor.
